Chapter 9

Coffee’s Creek , Montana Territory, August 1871

Anastacia ran as quickly as she could manage, but the wolves were right on her heels. She knew she wouldn’t be able to outrun them. She told herself to think, to concentrate on her surroundings, and find a way out of this.

Her eyes darted in every direction, searching. A tree. If she could get up a tree, she knew the wolves would never be able to follow. But before she could get in a tree, she’d have to put some distance between herself and the wolves.

She tore through the bushes, begging her legs to move faster. The air scorched her lungs with every breath, as though it, too wanted her to give up. Anastacia kept going, forcing herself to be faster, to outrun the wolves.

Just when the crashing of bodies behind her grew further away, just when she thought she might be safe, something clamped around her right forearm. It pulled her to a stop, and she fell to the ground, a thud accompanying her.

A wolf had its mouth wrapped around her forearm, its teeth digging deeper. He jerked his head, making the pain worse. Anastacia cried out, but the pain canceled the sound. She knew she was screaming, but she heard nothing.

The wolf growled, pulling at her. She turned her body, trying to kick him, barely managing to catch him in the head. He let go, whimpering. Anastacia scrambled to her feet and clutched her bleeding arm. The wolf licked her blood from the fur around his mouth. Her stomach churned.

As he began to growl, she found a branch low enough to grab and pulled herself into a tree. She climbed until she was sure the tree would snap from her weight.

More wolves arrived, all of them snarling below the tree. She screamed as loud as she could, hoping against hope that Franklyn would hear her.
